Well maybe not everything but even if we try to eat only the so-called healthy foods, they will not deliver. Our foods have changed. The species we grow; the way they are grown; the post-harvest handling and storage; and the way we cook, all reduce the nutritional quality.

Everything You Know About 'Healthy Food' Is Wrong

Did you know the Mediterranean Diet was originally based on 300 wild foods which were foraged (not farmed) from around the Med Sea? Recent analyses of olive oil from the fruits from wild olive trees were many times higher in antioxidant capacity than the olive oil we get bottled or in tins in supermarkets.

Do you use olive oil as a cooking oil? The low smoke point of olive oil means we should avoid high temperature stir-frying with it as trans-fats are formed and the oil is oxidized at high heat. The best oil for frying is peanut oil or use a combination of coconut and macadamia nut oils.

Ever wondered why we see so many diets, pills and potions all saying they they are the way to lose and maintain an ideal body weight or to avoid ageing so quickly or to have more energy, clearer thinking, better skin, hair and nails or whatever the next health trend is all about?

My purpose in life is what I have been working on for 40 years: How do we increase our healthspan so our lifespan is disease-free, energized and rich so that we can all pursue our own life purpose?

True, I took a few years away from 100% focus on nutrition and worked on wild foods as part of an authentic Australian cuisine but I put on so much weight that I had to get away from restaurant food and back to nutrition. I went from a high of 132kg to 85kg after developing, testing and proving my own science-based, wild food enhanced diet. I and others who have used my diet have maintained their new, healthy weight, for years.

This is simple, easy, permanent weight loss which is also healthy and based on good science as well as the eating habits of the world's longest living culture.

I try to inspire health heroes who recognize they need to change, give them tools to make it simple and easy (no will power needed) and help them to reap the benefits from wild foods in the right combinations.

In my last email, I presented the following list of habits we need to instill to be healthy:
  • Top up your nutrition with whatever wild foods you can find to forage for yourself or get from us
  • Every day, do some exercise for physical health (even just 2-3 minutes of high intensity effort)
  • Work on your emotional health (strengthen your relationships)
  • Focus on your mental health (creativity and inspiration)
  • Commit to your spiritual health (gratitude and helping others) but most importantly of all ...
  • Top up your nutrition with whatever wild foods you can find to forage for yourself or get from us (yes, this is SO important I wrote it twice)
Now you might have heard of the Pareto Principle or the 80:20 rule which applies to pretty much everything, our health included.

The last point in my daily to do list above (about topping up your nutrition with wild foods) is the 20% of what we should be doing to get 80% of the health improvements that we all want and need.

Do the 20% and we are not just 1/5th of the way there but because of its importance, getting the phytonutrients from wild foods underpins 80% of our health outcomes.

I recently had some joint pains come back after working with some heavy hand tools for a full day. When I was a teenager I dislocated my thumbs at various times sparring in karate fights and now as a sexagenarian, De Quervain syndrome rises its ugly head if I over-work my hands.

It is a reminder that systemic inflammation or metaflammation is a constant threat to us all and LIFE is part of my strategy to treat pain whether it is local or more widespread.

What did I do to rid myself of the pain?


When the pain gets my attention, I boost my daily servings and take LIFE 3 times a day along with 2 capsules of Karuah Activated Turmeric™ twice a day. I made sure to get at least a scoop of Karuah Active Magnesium daily so I make sure I always have a batch of my KAM Kookies on hand. I also start a calcium clean out and take 3 capsules of Karuah ChancaPlus™ every 8 hours for 48 hours.

The elevated servings of LIFE, KAT and KAM are maintained for 3-4 days even though the pain generally all but disappears after 2 days. I then drop back to our recommended maintenance serve sizes.

Note that as our activities change, so our nutrition needs to be supported. Dial it up when you are stressed, grieving, work harder than usual, need to avoid any viruses going around, are about to travel overseas or any activity which challenges your normal nutritional status and our dependence on a diet of modern foods.

Let me address some of the misgivings of a modern diet;

Karuah ChancaPlus takes aim at calcium deposits in our soft tissues. This issue is the root cause of cancers, stones and calcification that can cause problems from kidney pain, blocked organ ducts, stiff heart valves and calcified cardiac muscles all the way to lethal rogue cell outgrowths.

Calcification of blood vessels is a common cause of hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, heart attacks and death. Interestingly, the form of calcium in the lining of blood vessels is calcium hydroxyapatite which is the same as the calcium in our bones. 

Google 'acute calcific tendonitis' and you will find that calcium can also be at the cause of many symptoms of metaflammation, including my painful thumbs. Interestingly, the calcium can be in the sheath through which the tendon usually slips painlessly but as part of repetitive strain injury, the calcium can lead to localized chronic inflammation.

Even local (acute) inflammation issues or just ageing signifies a calcium problem so I use the protocol I described above as my monthly clean up. This is probably the only 'cleansing' system to use since our organs constantly handle most other residue eliminations you read about in magazines. Forget any diet that restricts your daily nutritional intake as we are restricted enough on the tiny range of poor quality foods we have today.

However, the form of the magnesium is crucial to its absorption and subsequent availability in the 326 biochemical reactions in which it is a cofactor, molecular carrier or enzyme regulator.

As a subscriber to my newsletters you will already know that whole food sources (of any phytonutrient) are far better than inorganic salts or synthetic molecules from the chemistry lab (as with most tableted preparations sold in pharmacies and supermarkets).

However, we do need to avoid many modern fruits and vegetables which can be loaded with bad sugars and low in beneficial phytonutrients. Also,  most ultra-processed foods are very much like the chemistry lab products and not really what you can (or should) consider as food.

The problem with magnesium is made worse in that our foods are grown in our ancient soils which are low in many minerals. Also, only healthy soils will support micro-organisms that activate minerals so that the food plants get them in a form they can use. We need the minerals activated to get the best results from them too.

Did you know that we generally absorb less than a quarter of the magnesium from tablet formulations compared to nearly 100% absorbed from whole foods in the right form.

By this I mean we get more nutrients from a nut butter than whole nuts or more from a seed flour than whole seeds.

Then there are the fertilizers used on much of the produce we have available. Farmers are sold sacks of stuff labelled NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) as if a few chemicals are the total answer to perfect plant growth and nutrition.

It is like the early days of nutritional science when synthetic multi-vitamin pills were promoted as the answer to our ideal health and Big Pharma made a killing with their chemicals.

Big Farma uses a lot of bags of NPK on modern crops and our collective health is failing us in Biblical proportions.

As a functional food, KAM doesn't need warnings to 'keep out of reach of children' or 'discontinue use if adverse effects occur' yet we see this advice on packs of pills and potions.

KAM just comes with bucket-loads of absorbable Mg and a range of other mission-critical minerals (Se, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn etc).
