Sometimes it's tough being an early adopter, a front runner, pushing the boundaries.

Personally, I've always had a passion for wild foods and really see their value and feel the need for all of us to have access to these amazingly nutritious (functional) foods.

When I was in my teens, there wasn't much information on what were called bush foods until the book Wild Foods in Australia by Cribb and Cribb was published in 1974. There was no World Wide Web back then either. I know. I know. It was way back when.

My choice of tertiary education was primarily to learn botany and biochemistry in order to find out more about the wild foods I was foraging on weekends and holidays. In 1983, I had the incredible opportunity to research the nutritional values of wild foods from my own foraging  but more importantly, foods collected and prepared by Indigenous Elders (mainly women) from remote region communities around Australia.

My own version of 'Raiders of the Lost Arc' was to go from the university biochemistry lab, onto a plane out of Sydney before hopping onto an Outback service flight with the Royal Flying Doctor or catching an Air North Cessna out to the communities.

I also fitted out my own vehicles and drove the 3 or more days to the real Outback of Australia and onto traditional Lands of the Larrakia, Mordiamu, Bechamel, Alyawarra, Pintubi, Yunkinjatjara, Pitjatjantjara, Wikmunkun, Yawuru and a great many more

Being able to travel to places where wild foods were still abundant because ecosystems were still being managed in traditional ways with mosaic burns at exactly the right time in the season or harvests were considerate of the on-going sustainability of the foods and their environment. The First Nation cultures were the epitome of eco-centricity - humans as part of Nature, not believing they can dominate it.

What a life-changing, eye-opening experience I've had and for which I am eternally grateful.

My labwork proved a new methodology now in common usage, for vitamin C analysis and proved that we had found the world's highest fruit source of the vitamin. This record has not been broken despite a global search for the new leader. Here's a paper which was a letter in the early 1980s, sent to the scientific journal, The Lancet, about a wild fruit that years later, I and a science teacher by the name of Brian Woods, termed the Kakadu plum.

Oh and a few years after this, I tried to get the message out there about the dangers of using aluminium foil as a wrap when baking food. Now aluminium foil is finally getting the coverage it needs as a moisture barrier that MUST be separated from the food being heated with parchment or silicone baking sheets or baking paper. Read the article as to why.

The last 15 years has been about more sharing information that is cutting edge and 5 or more years ahead of the game (little has changed, I guess). I am referring to the nutritional science of wild foods and not just the phytonutrients themselves but what they do, how they influence our food choices, our microbiome and a whole lot more. Wild foods are complex mixtures of components with which we evolved over millennia. These days, we rely on modern selections of what were once wild foods but now are a shadow of their former selves.

I published my findings in my 6th book, Wild Foods; Looking Back 60,000 years for Clues to our Future Survival (a very few soft cover copies are still available) and more are summarized and presented in my recent ebook, 33 Myths of Health, Nutrition and Weight Loss.

And now, I'm thrilled to be working with other researchers in the field of nutritional science, which has exploded in growth in recent years.

Some of the discoveries brought to the fore have been:

  • the importance of phytonutrients, their scope and the benefits they impart to our health
  • the relevance of anti-inflammatory effects on rogue cells rendering them unable to stick together to form tumours
  • the importance of mitochondrial health and the negative effects of many drugs on their function
  • mitochondrial control over the death of damaged and rogue cells
  • the weirdness over magnesium supplements stating 200mg available Mg in their recommended doses yet most are around 20% bioavailable which means they are selling 40mg doses
  • the critical issue of high (unbalanced) levels of calcium in our system leading to magnesium deficiency, calcium deposits in soft tissues, calcification of muscles and blood vessels, calculi as sites for rogue cell attachment etc
  • calcium in a low magnesium environment does NOT promote the strength of our teeth and bones
  • still to be discovered by the mainstream media is that our microbiome dictate our taste drives and a deficiency of phytonutrients is attempted to be fixed through our drives for sweetness and fat. The problem is that modern sweet or fatty foods are devoid of phytonutrients so we over-eat empty calories and remain without the components we and our gut bugs need
I could go on but I hope that the above has been of some interest.

Oh. One last thing.

Due to the bioavailabilty of the activated minerals in Karuah Active Magnesiumâ„¢, we have reduced our serve size to just 1 x 15g scoopful a day. New size scoop in each pack.

The price will be less as we are offering a single 500g pouch for the monthly collection in the Holy Grail to Health and 3 x 500g pouches for the 3-month pack.
