Australian Natural preservative - Kills bacteria, Slows Down Kids
This was the press release just sent out around the world on my natural preservative, Herbal-Active™. You might have read sections of it in past blogs but no harm thinking about the ramifications of eating all those preservatives in our food. It seems we are not rotting in the grave as we used to do:
PRESS RELEASE
A recent article about a new, carefully controlled study in the UK on sodium benzoate (a common food preservative) and food colourings in foods showed that some artificial additives increase hyperactivity and decrease attention span in a wide range of children, not just those for whom over-activity has been diagnosed as a learning problem.
Fortunately, Herbal-Active™ is a new, natural antimicrobial made from extracts of culinary herbs made by Vic Cherikoff Food Services Pty Ltd is strongly anti-microbial at the tiny addition rate of 0.1%. This could just be the natural preservative the food, beverage and cosmetic industries have been seeking to replace sorbates and benzoates.
“The smart thing about my culinary herb blend as a natural preservative, is that it uses the synergistic activity gained when combining multiple compounds, just like the common use of sodium benzoate in combination with potassium sorbate. With Herbal-Active™ the end result is over 20 times greater than the sum of the parts.” states Vic Cherikoff, the scientist behind the new natural antimicrobial.
Natural preservatives made from conventional herbs such as rosemary, tend to also impart a taste to the foods in which they are used. In cosmetics, extracts of grapefruit seed and Kiwifruit (Chinese gooseberry) are finding some applications but they have not migrated into the food industry.
Herbal-Active™ has only just been soft-launched and early adopters have found that it works brilliantly.
The proprietary blend is all natural and made from extracts of a combination of ordinary culinary herbs. This means that a product’s label only needs to state ‘herb extracts’ (or culinary herb extracts) and the claim of ‘Preservative free’ can be made.
Testing all the applications of Herbal-Active™ in the many and varied manufacturing scenarios is a daunting task so manufacturers who have a need for a natural preservative are asked to request a sample of Herbal-Active™ and test it for themselves.
So far it has proven effective in low pH beverages, a juice based nutritional supplement, sauces and condiments, more neutral pH preserved cheeses, a fruit juice concentrate and a skin care range of cosmetics. Herbal-Active™ has applications in cold formulated products and other products where a natural preservative is beneficial to both, shelf life and food safety. From challenge trials, components in the formulation are very effective against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria, including most of the food spoilage organisms.
Herbal-Active™ can also be used as a 1% solution in the kitchen to treat red and white meats and even strawberries and cucumbers, all which have spoilage problems on storage. It has applications in pet foods and even stock feed where antibiotics are occasionally used in feed to reduce pathogen loads.
One challenge did arise in initial tests:
While an addition rate of 0.07 to 0.1% of the Herbal-Active™, will stop yeasts and bacteria in their tracks, moulds are a little more resilient.
Tests showed that at 1% even these fungal brutes succumb to this uniquely Australian natural preservative. However, at this level, Herbal-Active™ is too strongly flavoured (no problem in cosmetics) if this were the final concentration needed.
So a protocol has been designed as a way around this problem:
The product in question was a mixture of a variety of fruit concentrates and powders. Several fruits were found to be major sources of mould contamination and so all the whole fruits were dipped in Herbal-Active™ at 1%. The fruits spent only seconds in the solution, were drained well and passed through a sanitized brush finisher. The Herbal-Active™ solution was re-used many times and up to 1000kg was dipped in 40kg of solution.
The fruit pulps were combined in the correct proportion to the recipe for the mixed puree, product. In another container, Herbal-Active™ powder was mixed into the other powders to be added to the recipe. The rate of addition was such as to give a 0.1% Herbal-Active™ content in the final fruit puree/powder mixture. A small amount of the fruit pulp blend was added to the Herbal-Active™ and powder mix to hydrate it slowly. The balance was added and the blending completed.
The net result of this approach is to expose the ingredients with high microbial loads to high levels of Herbal-Active™, preferably around the 1% mark. By then using pure diluents, the concentration of Herbal-Active™ can then be reduced to tasteless thresholds.
The result was a vastly extended shelf life with moulds, yeasts and bacteria all brought down to extremely low levels near zero.

Herbal Active
Can you please send more info how to use it as cosmetic preservative. What is it made from? Do you have any data?

Where could a person obtain a sample of this to do some testing?
— Kent Anderson · Oct 17, 03:46 PM · #
The Herbal-Active™ is a simple mix-in product which is supplied as an emulsion to be diluted into a working solution by the most appropriate diluent. For example, if I were to add it to a water soluble base such as an aqueous lotion or a beverage, the emulsion gets diluted with either glycerine or food grade ethanol. If I were to use the Herbal-Active™ in a marinated cheese in oil, I would use an appropriate oil (canola, macadamia nut etc). Or if the end product was a seasoning on say, chicken or fish then I’d adsorb the Herbal-Active™ emulsion onto a powdered seasoning base.
The instructions are all on the specification sheets supplied with the product.

Manuel,
I’m happy to provide a sample for manufacturers and some guidance on how to best use Herbal-Active™. However, the recipe is a black box formula developed after years of very intensive microbial trials and research.
Herbal-Active™ is now starting to be used around the world in the wider food, beverage and cosmetic industries and there will be a retail product out soon which can ensure that you keep your food safe from food spoilage organisms without the use of toxic synthetic chemicals. It also makes a great hand and body wash, surface and equipment sanitizer and best of all, it’s food grade. In fact, some of the components have very beneficial actions when it comes to health and well-being.

We sell a mangosteen product in Australia under the Vitalxan label.
We would be particulary interested if Herbal_Active can be formulated in a powdered form to add to our brand.
Please advise if this is possible and contact the writer.
Hi Tim,
Herbal-Active can be applied as a powdered product and is being used in this way in seasonings rubbed onto a carrier (rice flour). For your application, the required dose can be added to some of the mangosteen mix and added to the remaining powder for its antimicrobial properties on solution. Cheers, Vic

I look forward to hear how you find my anti-microbials work for your product. More and more companies are adopting them in an ever-increasing range of foods, beverages and cosmetics. Using the Herbal-Active as a dip for fresh produce is also a great way to extend the shelf life (saves money on the food you buy as you waste less) as it kills food spoilage organisms (as well as any food pathogens).

Hi,
Could you please send me more information about your product as I am developing a range of hair and skin care products. I am stuck as I have not found a suitable natural preservative in order to sell my products commercially.
Hi Silvia. There are already many cosmetic companies using Herbal-Active in their hair and skin care products. Herbal-Active at 1-2% does have an aromatic profile of its own but many people find it appealing or it can be masked with conventional fragrances.

Does Herbal-Active contain grapefruit seed extracts? I understand that it is inconvenient to disclose what is in the formula of Herbal-Active, but i am keen to know what it doesnt contain in order to decide whether to give it a try.
Herbal-Active does not contain grapefruit seed extract but is a blend of culinary herb extracts which provide broad spectrum antimicrobial activity.

Herbal-Active works really well in skincare products. An addition of 1-2% is recommended and the method of use is to add this amount to the actives then dilute with the ingredients in increasing levels of microbial purity as the mixture is emulsified.

Hi Cherie,
Herbal-Active makes an excellent anti-microbial for toothpaste. As your product is for a kid's paste, perhaps work the lower end of 0.5% addition and mix the powder in to your dry ingredients before making the paste, if that works in your formulation.

I’m interested in your Herbal Active for fruit juice products. Could you please send me more information and a sample for me to test.
Pat, for fruit juice products the Herbal-Active is best used as a dipping solution at 1% and all the fruits get a dip and drain. Then the juice you make from the fruit has super-low micro counts and if you are bottling the juice, add 0.1% Herbal-Active for on-going protection. Pasteurizing is still recommended but can be at the lowest of temperatures and time eg 65C for 15 secs.

Hello Vic, still working with the Xyngular company regrading there juice, do you have any other mixed fruit juices that are using the herbal active, also can you send me the cost per 1liter of juice. Thanks again for all that you are dong. Doc
Hi Brian, Kakadu Complex uses Herbal-Active. I supply the 11 wild foods all prepared using a dip and drain for the component fruits before brush finishing and blending. Our micro loads are typically zero to less than 5 cfu/g so we don't pasteurize (in order to protect the antioxidants). We ship this blend to the processor for final blending into the other components of Kakadu.
Another company in Singapore is dipping vegetables in 1% Herbal-Active before juicing, bottling and selling as a chilled product. We delivered 28 days but they label it as 14 days as too long a shelf life makes the juice look preserved.
I hope this answers your question.

Did you gain this approval and do you think enough information would be available in the public domain to submit to ACO for similar approvals.
Also, have you any data on the efficacy of Herbal-Active in cosmetics – including dosage levels and stability information.
